Andre Avila, dance instructor and owner/founder of Rhythm Journey Dance Company was born in Bogotá, Colombia where his ballet, jazz, and tap training began at the age of eight. Later, he expanded his repertoire to include South American folkdance and traditional Latin social dances. Training in rhythm and smooth ballroom dance began when Andre moved to the US in 2003. Since that time, he has taught and competed professionally with studios in Las Vegas, New York, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, specializing in rhythm and smooth ballroom with additional proficiencies in West Coast Swing, Hustle, Kizomba, and Flamenco.

Andre is passionate about making dance accessible to everyone.  He is an instructor for ComMotion - Community In Motion, where he teaches military veterans, cancer survivors, seniors, and people with disabilities.  He is also a volunteer for the American Dance Festival's Parkinson's Movement Initiative, and an instructor at the Durham Arts Council and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Andre’s extensive experience with a wide variety of dance styles, innovative choreography, and entertaining approach to group instruction has made him a popular instructor in high demand by all ages and all levels.

“I want every student to experience the grace, musicality, rhythm, and creativity of dance. Most importantly, I want my students to have fun!”

When Andre isn’t teaching, he enjoys practicing martial arts, training for obstacle races, and dabbling in amateur photography.
